These are also known as “petty patents” as they offer a shorter term of protection. However, they offer several key advantages. For instance, they are easier to be granted as they are often not examined at the application stage by the relevant Patent Office; they are cheaper; the time from application to grant is much quicker than for patents; and they can be valid in some countries even if the application is lodged after the invention has been made public!
They are not yet available in the UK or as an EU-wide
property right. However, they are available in many other countries such
as Japan and Germany.
